Being an Inclusive Leader: Myths and Recommendations from Research

On 25 July, I was invited to talk about what makes an inclusive leader at the Calvary Adelaide Hospital. Here is a brief summary of my talk:


  1. Workplace inclusiveness is not just a social or ethical issue. It is an essential business issue for modern organizations.

  2. Common myths of workplace inclusion: (1) Diversity = Inclusion and (2) Inclusion = No Difference

  3. Inclusiveness = a balance of (1) belongingness and (2) uniqueness

  4. Critical leader characteristics for being inclusive: (1) pro-diversity beliefs, (2) cognitive complexity, and (3) humility
